Ten Smart Ways To Get Distinction In Every Semester Exams

The expectation of many Nigerian students is to get distinction in all courses, and in every semester exams in any way possible. But, for some Nigerian students, exams period is a nightmare, as they struggle to assimilate and pass their exams within the shortest possible time.

On many occassion, i have heard about some students adopting different jarking styles like the so called TDB (Till Day Break), or MTN (Morning Till Night) and so on, and they still end up with low grades.

However, from my own experience and discovery as a student, one thing we need to do to ace an exam is by applying a more strategic approach and gain the most advantage of it.

So with no further ado, below are ten smart ways to get distinction in every semester exams.

How To Get Distinction In Every Semester Exams

ATTEND ALL CLASSES

During my time on campus, in ABU Zaria, i always wonder why my lecturers do insist on taking class attendance. As a matter of fact, if a student does not have atleast 75% attendance, that student can not sit for an exam.

The crux of the matter is that, you need to attend all classes if you want to get distinction in every semester exam.

You should also develop your listening skills and take note of every topics, especially the ones the lecturer stresses upon the most. There is every tendency for that topic to be featured among the exam questions set for you.

REVIEW YOUR COURSES

Besides attending every classes, make sure you review what you learnt each day. Also make sure that you thoroughly understand the contents of your notes and seek for help on any course\topic that is not clear to you.

Keep doing these everyday and it will become easier for you to get an ”A” in any course.

SET A TARGET

When i was a student, i always set a target for myself in every courses i took. For those courses i was good at, i target A’s. While for those courses i was less good at, i target B’s. And it paid off.

The truth of the matter is this, ” a student’s attitude and psychology are the key ingredients to getting an outstanding mark in any courses”.

So, set a target and work at meeting those target. Always tell yourself that anything is possible. Whatever you can conceive can be achieve. Put effort into what you do and you are guarantee a success.

AVOID DISTRACTIONS

Many students, especially freshers or Jambite get carried away with social activities like campus buzz, social drinks, dinners, night parties, pinging etc. These are things that will distract you and make you lose focus in your studies.

My advice here is this, learn to always guide yourself on campus. Once you eliminate distration during exam period, 50% of your job is done.

HAVE A STUDY PLAN

If you do not have a study plan/timetable as a student i am sorry you are serious yet. A study plan is time you set aside to read and assimilate.

Creating and sticking to a study plan could be the difference between getting distinction in exams or just passing them.

Create a study plan and space away from distraction like TV, mobile phone etc. And rotate your subjects to avoid getting bored.

STUDY WITH PAST QUESTIONS

Make sure you search for relevant questions for your study. The importance of past questions can not be overemphasised.

Past papers have atleast 85% of the questions you will be asked in an exam.

PARTICIPATE IN GROUP DISCUSSION

I always participate in group discussions as a student on campus and it helped me alot. Some people do not see any importance in it.

But, from what i have learnt over the years, group discussion helps me to know whether i understand what i have been studying overtime. If i struggle to explain a concept or topic to someone, then i know i will stuggle to explain it in the exam.

Furthermore, group discussion broadens or expand ones knowledge of a field of study.

LEARN FROM OTHERS

Learning from other course mates and friends will help you alot, especially when a topic seems really difficult to understand.

Remember, “no man is an island, entire of itself”. We all have one or two things we don’t know or understand.

So, if you find that there is an aspect to a course that you do not understand, ask for assistance from someone you know can help clarify it.

REFLECT ON WHAT YOU READ BEFORE EACH EXAMS

In the eve or hours to your exams, do a reflection or recap of what you have read so far. This will give you a sense of direction on how prepared you are and what you still need to remind yourself and improve on.

I use this technique each time i want to sit for an exam, and it has worked for me.

APPROACH EXAM QUESTIONS SYSTEMATICALLY

Manytimes, our problem is not whether we have read enough for an exam. It is about how articulate we present our answers. This mostly affect social science students who need to render their answers in form of an essay.

Learn to approach exam questions systematically with an introduction first, followed by a body (content), and finally, a conclusion.

By so doing, you are making your points clear to the examiner or lecturer marking your script or paper. It shows a sense of tidiness about you and your work to the examiner and most at times you get reward for just being tidy with your answers.
