You may have been thinking about your chances of getting admission this year, this article will guide you.
Before we attempt this questions, we want to use this platform to inform you that JAMB has announced and pegged this year cut-off marks 160 for Universities and 120 for Polytechnics and Colleges of Education.
With that said, many JAMB candidates are curious and want to know their chances of getting admission this year. And they asking questions like:
- How can i calculate my average score for admission?
- I want to know my average score for admission?
Well, the truth is aside from calculating your average score for admission, there are other factors that can guarantee your admission into any Nigerian universities. You can visit the link here to know more.
Now, most Nigerian universities has developed a system of calculating candidate’s average score during admission screening exercise.
Tertiary institutions like University of Ilorin and Ahmadu Bello University has been doing this for years now, they use this average score as a basis for admission selection.
This average score is calculated using the number of sittings for O’Level, O’Level results and JAMB UTME Score grades.
Your Chances Of Getting Admission This year
Here is how to know your chances of getting admission. It will be calculated like this:-
STEP 1 : Number of sittings for O’Level
- One sittings = 10 marks
- Two sittings = 3 marks
Total marks obtainable = 10 marks
STEP 2 : O’Level Results Grading from 5 subjects
- A (A1) = 6 marks
- B (B2, B3) = 4 marks
- C (C4, C5, C6) = 3 marks
Total marks obtainable = 30 marks
STEP 3 : JAMB UTME Score Grades
- 180-200 = 20-23 marks
- 200-250 = 24-33 marks
- 251-300 = 34-43 marks
- 300-400 = 44-60 marks
Total marks obtainable = 60 marks
So, your chances of getting admission will be a summation of what we’ve discussed so far. Candidates will be awarded marks/points based on their performances in O’levels and JAMB as highlighted above.
Furthermore, schools at liberty will conduct the screening excercise via any method they deem fit.
Finally, admission process will also put into factors like catchment areas, educationally Less Developed State and admission by merit in determining the number of candidates admitted.
How To Calculate Your Post UTME Score
Universities, Polytechnics, and even colleges are allowed to conduct Post JAMB screenings for prospective undergraduate students into their respective institutions.
However, these Institutions must on their own plan and organise for Post UTME registrations, conduct examinations, release results and many other essential requirements for the smooth conduct of the screening.

How To Calculate UNILAG Post UTME Aggregate Score
For example, in order to calculate your UNILAG Post UTME aggregate score, the formula purportedly adopted by the institution is the sum of your UTME SCORE divided by 8 and your POST UTME SCORE divided by 2.
For instance:
If you scored 290 in UTME and went on to score 70 in POST UTME, your aggregate score will be calculated thus:
UTME Score = 290/8 =36.25
Post UTME Score = 70/2 =35
Aggregate Score =36.25 + 35 =71.25%
How To Calculate DELSU Screening Score
If you participated in DELSU Post UTME screening exercise, this is how to calculate their post UTME score aggregate below:-
To get your DELSU Post UTME score aggregate; divide your UTME score by 8 and your post UTME score by 2.
For example, Sarah scored 250 in Jamb and 55% in PUTME.
250 divided by 8 = 31.25. 55%
divided by 2 = 27.5 .
So. 31.5 plus 27.5 = 59%
As earlier mentioned above, there is no general formula in use when calculating Post UTME score. Most higher Institutions adopt a formula that best suits their purpose for the screening exercise.
Other Ways To Gain University Admission Without JAMB
Now let me show you other chances of getting admission this year if your JAMB Score is too low for an admission:
Through IJMB Programme
IJMB is a form of A’ Level programme conducted by some universities in Nigeria. The programme is more prominent in the Northern part of Nigeria where schools like Ahmadu bello University, Unijos, Unilorin, Uniabuja and others admits students into 200 level, provided that they are able to score the required number of points to be qualified for admission.
This programme usually runs for a period 8 to 9 months, after which successful candidates gains admission into any prefered course of study. This programme is very legitimate.
To gain admission into IJMB programme, you only require nothing more than your O’level result with minimum of five 5 credits.
NB: If you are interested in running an IJMB programme, we advice you enrol with a recognised university, like the ones mentioned above. The reason is that chances of gaining admission with these schools are higher than with other private IJMB centres.
Through A Diploma/Pre-degree
Many tertiary institutions offers a Diploma or Pre-degree programme. The programme usually runs for 1,2, or 3 years depending on the school.
At the end of the programme, you can apply for direct entry admission into 200 level.
All you need to apply for a Diploma programme is your O’level result.

JUPEB is a national examination body saddled with the responsibility of conducting examinations for students, who have undergone approved subject combinations and are seeking direct entry admissions into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Some schools like UNIBEN, UNILAG and others run the JUPEB programme.

The programme normally run for one academic session of two semesters and you only need a minimum of five (5) credits passes in your O’levels to enrol.
Through Private Universities
There are private universities you can gain admission into without JAMB. However, some of them may ask you to sit for JAMB the following year after you might have become a student.
Through National Open University (NOUN)
National Open University now seems to be a safe haven for students to gain admission into tertiary institution. The good news is that you don’t need to write JAMB to secure admission into the school. All you need is your O’level result to apply.
Many students are now enrolling into NOUN. As a matter of fact, NOUN has the largest numbers of students in Nigeria presently.
However, you need to be aware that it’s a part-time programme and as such you may not be qualified for NYSC service at the end of your degree programme.
Through Foreign Tertiary Institutions
All Schools outside Nigeria does not require you to write JAMB. All that is needed for enrolment into foreign universities is your WAEC or GCE result.
However, if you are studying in Europe or America, you may be asked to sit for international exams like GMAT, IELTS, GRE etc to be offered admission.
