This article gives you all you need to know about UTME JAMB Subject Combination For Medicine and Surgery while preparing to study medicine and Surgery in a Nigerian accredited University.

Students studying Medicine and Surgery under the faculty of Medical, Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences are M.B.B.S. Certified after the completion of their 5 or 6 Years programme (depending on admission by JAMB or Direct Entry).

JAMB Subject Combination For Medicine and Surgery

Medicine and Surgery comprise the number of health care practices which include: Community medicine, Damertology, Neurology, Opthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pathology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Preventive medicine, Radiology, Surgery, etc.

 

What is the most important subject in Medicine?

Physiology, Bio-Chemistry, Pharmacology and Pathology are the most important subjects to be read in order to become a successful Doctor. Anatomy is the fundamentals of Medicine. These are the five subjects to be covered up, the rest of the subjects depend on one’s interest in that particular subject.

Some of the most common subjects covered by pre-med pathway programmes include general Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.

Advanced pre-Masters also include topics like Anatomy. More technical specialisations also include Mathematics classes.

O’Level Requirements For Medicine and Surgery

You must have had a science background to study Medicine and Surgery.

Candidates who are interested in studying Medicine and Surgery are expected to have at least five Credits Passes in  Mathematics, English Language, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.

 

JAMB Subject Combination For Medicine and Surgery

In the UTME JAMB, please do not ail to remember that the English Language is Compulsory to enroll for this course.

Also, the other three (3) JAMB subject combination for Medicine and Surgery under the Faculty of Medical, Pharmaceutical & Health Sciences in Nigerian Universities include;

  • Physics,
  • Chemistry,
  • and Biology.

However, some Nigerian Universities give Special requirements for Waiver. These include:

  1. NILE University of Nigeria, Abuja accepts Chemistry, Biology and any other Science subject.
  2. Usman Danfodio University and University of Maiduguri accept Mathematics in lieu of Physics.
  3. University of Ilorin requires Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
  4. University of Lagos requires English Language, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
  5. Ahmadu Bello University requires Use of English, Physics, Chemistry, and biology.
  6. University of Portharcourt requires Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
  7. KASU requires Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

Direct Entry Requirements For Medicine and Surgery

Admitted candidates for Medicine and Surgery through Direct Entry usually start their study from 200 level (Year 2) of the course.

Most Universities prefer you to obtain your result in not more than one sitting. The requirement for you to gain Direct Entry admission to study Medicine and Surgery if you don’t intend to use UTME JAMB includes:

  •  ‘A’ Level passes in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Zoology in addition to the UTME requirements.
  •  BSC, BOS, Sc., etc in a relevant programme such as Biochemistry, Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory, Zoology, Chemistry, with a grade not less than a Second Class Lower Division.

Universities that do not accept candidates through Direct Entry admission include; Niger Delta University, BINGHAM University, University of Portharcourt.

Some Nigerian Universities give Special requirements for Waiver. These include:

  1. University of Benin grants admission with a minimum of three (3) ‘A’ level passes with a C or at least of 12 points in Biology or Zoology, Physics and Chemistry in one (1) sitting; AND a minimum of Second Class Upper Division from an accredited University in either B.Sc Biological Sciences or B.Sc. Medical Sciences.
  2. Universsity of Calabar grants admission with a minimum of Degree with Second Class Lower Division in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory, Biology, Zoology, or Chemistry. But do not accept IJMB for Direct Entry.
  3. University of Ilorin grants admission with B.Sc Second Class Honours in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Physiology, Zoology, and other Basic Science programmes. However, accepts a minimum aggregate of 13 points.
  4. University of Lagos grants admission with JUPEB/‘A’ level passes in Physics Chemistry and Biology. AND B.Sc. first class/second class upper in programmes which include Physiology, Biochemistry, Physiotherapy, Ophthalmology, Pharmacology, and Zoology.
  5. Niger Delta University grants admission with ‘A’ level passes in Chemistry, Biology, and Physics with at least 10 points at one (1) or two (2) sittings. AND B.Sc. with at least second class upper division in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Zoology, Chemistry, Physics and Botany.
  6. Obafemi Awolo University grants admission with at least B.Sc. with second class upper division in a related programme in the Sciences.
  7. Ahmadu Bello University grants admission with ‘A’ Level/IJMB Passes in subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, or Zoology.
  8. University of Portharcourt grants admission with Three (3) A/Level passes in JUPEB or IJMB or GCE or HSC Passes in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology along with JAMB entry requirements. First Degree (Second Class Honours – Upper Division) in any one of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and any other related course along with UTME JAMB entry requirements.
  9. KASU grants admission with Ordinary level requirement and; Passes in Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Zoology at Higher School Certificates or Advance level of GCE, IJMB or its equivalents. First Degree is also accepted in relevant Biological or Physical Sciences discipline.
