The Rivers State University of Science and Technology was established in 1972 as the College of Science and Technology. It was granted independent university status in 1980 and was renamed from College of Science and Technology to Rivers State University of Science and Technology. It is the only university in Nigeria that is accredited to offer degree programs in Marine Engineering.

The University offers a wide range of programmes from the full-time certificate, diploma and degree programmes to part-time evening and weekend degree programmes, cutting across Seven (7) Faculties, namely: Faculty Sciences, Engineering, Law, Management Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Agriculture and Faculty of Science and Technical Education.

Rivers State University Admission Requirements
To study at Rivers State University, you must possess the following requirements:
- The candidate must be over 16 years of age in the year of admission (Some student swear an affidavit just to increase their ages)
- Candidates must possess a minimum of 5 credit passes in relevant subjects which must include English Language and mathematics at GCE O’Level, WASCE, SSCE, NECO or approved equivalents at not more than 2 sittings.
- Candidates with Teachers Grade II (TC II) with passes at credit or merit levels in conjunction with credit passes in relevant subjects at GCE, WASCE, SSCE, NECO or approved equivalents may be considered. No subject may be counted at both TC II and GCE O/Level, WASCE, SSCE, NECO or approved equivalents.
- The candidate must make at least 180 pass mark in JAMB to qualify for internal screening.

How to calculate your own composite/aggregate/cut off
Jamb Score/8 + Post UTME score = Composite score.
For example
Someone who scores 200 in JAMB and 25 in Post UTME has a composite of 50.
200/8 + 25 = 50
