WHY STUDY NURSING OR NURSING SCIENCE?

In today’s society, the role of Nurses can not be push aside. Infact, Nurses or People in the Nursing profession are arguably one of the most important set of people any country should have. Nurses play supportive role to doctors in the quest to save lives and attend to sick people.

If you are aspiring to study Nursing/Nursing Science then you are making a wonderful decision. There are many career opportunities you can get as a Nursing graduate, which ranges from Public health Nurse, Mental health Nurse, Mid wife, Paediatrics Nurse, Councellor etc.

 

O’LEVEL REQUIREMENTS TO STUDY NURSING/NURSING SCIENCE

To study Nursing or Nursing Science, you must acquire at least Five O’ level Credit Passes in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and English Language.

There are however, variation to these requirements in some Nigerian higher institutions. In the case of some schools highlighted for you below:

  • UNIBADAN requires Five (5) or Six (6) Level Credit Passes at One or Two Sittings to include English Language, Biology/Health Science, Chemistry, Mathematics and any other one of the following: Economics, Government, Literature in English, History, Geography, Physics.
  • UNN requirements not more than two sittings in SSCE or its equivalent.
  • AAU requires Five ‘O’ Level Credit Passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry at a sitting.
  • NDU requires the Credit Passes in not more than two sittings.

JAMB Subject Combination For Nursing

To apply for Nursing/Nursing Science in JAMB, you need the following subjects:-

  1. English Language (Compulsory For all courses)
  2. Biology/Health Science,
  3. Physics and
  4. Chemistry.

 

Direct Entry Requirement for Nursing/Nursing Science

Direct entry candidates are required to possess at least:

Two (2) A Level passes in Biology/ Zoology, Chemistry and Physics plus three (3) other O Level credit passes in Mathematics, Physics and English Language.

 

In addition to knowing your JAMB Subject Combination for Nursing, there are also TOP NIGERIAN INSTITUTIONS to study this course/programme.

Nursing Science can be studied under the Medical, Pharmacy, Health Science faculties of the following top Nigerian Universities:-

  • University of Lagos (UNILAG)
  • University of Ilorin (UNILORIN)
  • University of Nigeria (UNN)
  • University of Benin (UNIBEN)
  • University of Calabar (UNICAL)
  • University of Ibadan (UI)
  • Ahmadu Bello University (ABU)
  • Babcock University (BABCOCK)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I study Nursing without Chemistry?
While some nursing programs may have specific high school course requirements, it’s generally recommended to have a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, and possibly physics in order to pursue a nursing degree

 

Can I study Nursing without WAEC?
The current approved entry requirement is five (5) O’level credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at not more than two (2) sittings from any of the following:

  • West African Examination Council (WAEC),
  • National Examination Council (NECO)

 

What subject is compulsory for Nursing?

Registered Nurse (RN) certificate with at least 5 credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry. Registered Midwifery Certificate. (iii) ABUAD requires three (3) ‘A’ Level passes in Chemistry, Physics and Biology. (iv) AUE – ND credit plus the UTME minimum requirements.

 

Can I use D7 chemistry to enter nursing school?
In fact, no school of nursing to date, be it private, state, or federal will accept a D7 or E8 pass or F9 in English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Maths.

      If you are going for 5 year Bachelor in Nursing Science, expect to seat for JAMB UTME.
      But if you want to enroll for a 3 year School of Nursing, you ONLY need to seat for an ENTRANCE EXAM to gain admission.

      Hi Joy, you can’t use D7 Maths to gain admission into a nursing school, so use the Credit Pass in Maths from another sitting. Applying with 2 sitting is possible.

      That depends on the admission requirements for the school you are Apply to study.
      You can replace Physics with Mathematics since it’s not a compulsory combination. But be sure your school accepts such combination.
