The UK is the number one study abroad destination for most Nigerian students.

In 2016, reports from the UK council for international students affairs shows that about 17, 973 Nigerians are studying in UK universities. These figure have magnificently increased by far more than 80% by the year 2023.

The country is home to a wide selection of internationally ranked colleges and universities. If you want to boost your employability status in Nigeria and abroad, it’s best to study in the UK.

This article will educate you with all the information needed to secure a UK student visa from. In order for you to have a smooth process, please take your time to read through all the details below.

How Nigerians Students Can Get A UK Student Visa

The Uk student (Tier 4) visa is a general visa for young individuals (16 or over) who have been offered provisional admission in a UK institution, proficient in English, enough financial backing or capabilities for support throughout his/her study’s duration. The most favourable time to apply is three (3) months before you start your course of study, this is to avoid refusal due to late application.

You can apply for a UK student visa at the UK High Commission in Abuja. The application process is easy and not stressful if you can provide all the required documents.

The documents you typically need for a Uk student visa are:

1. A Valid Nigerian International Passport

  • The personal data page that shows your birth date, country of origin, etc. with a photocopy.
  • Any pages of your passport with stamps, visas or markings to indicate your travel history,
  • A full blank page and six months passport validity.

2. Proof of Travel History

You must provide information on your valid visa from United States/United Kingdom/Canada as well as a previous travel history. This can include copies of;

  • Your previous passport and /or visas (used within the last ten (10) years to travel outside your country)
  • Entry and exit stamps
  • Study and/or work permits that indicate your duration outside of your country (If applicable)
  • Expired or valid visas
  • Boarding passes
  • If you hold a valid visa from the United States /United Kingdom, Canada or Europe, provide a clear, scanned copy of your visa.

3. UK student visa application form

  • A properly completed visa application form, including the self assessment form (appendix 8) this is usually filled online, click here.

4. One recent passport photograph (sizes: 45mm X 35mm)

5. Evidence of provisional admission into a UK school or University

  • This evidence include your CAS reference number, and
  • Admission documents used to obtain CAS reference number, these documents may include WAEC certificate, Diploma, Bachelor degree, Masters’ degree, etc.

6. Evidence of Financial sufficiency for course fees and living costs

This can be indicated by;

  • Your original bank statements which covers the past four to six months
  • A bank draft in convertible currency
  • Pay stubs
  • An employment letter
  • Proof of assets or business
  • Tax reports, declarations or statements
  • A letter from the person or institution providing you with money in cases of sponsorship or scholarships.

7. Health certificate and evidence of tuberculosis screening

8. English proficiency assessments

  • IELTS
  • TOEFL and,
  • WAEC where applicable

9. Family Information

  • Legal guardians’ letter of consent for applicants under the age of 18
  • Birth certificate for under-18 proposed care arrangement and money held by parent or legal guardian

The UK students visa application process is done through Teleperformance contact (TLS), they are a commercial company which works hand-in-hand with the UK visa and immigration (UKVI) office.

To begin your application process, you have to visit HERE to fill your application form, pay your fees and book your visa appointment for TLScontact visa application centres.

After filling the online form, you will be given a unique GWF reference number, a confirmation email for your TLS appointments date, location, and supporting documents will also be sent to you.

After that, you will be required to register your details on the TLS website to avoid unnecessary delays; also your visa application can be tracked and payments for value added services can be done using this website.

Submission of Nigerian International passport are on Monday to Friday between 08:30AM to 04:30 PM excepts on public holidays. Note that late attendance will require appointments re-booking.
