WHY STUDY MICROBIOLOGY?

The question of why study Microbiology is a good one- the impact of Microorganisms are literally everywhere, covering all the surface of our body and in every natural and urban habitat.

With the study of Micro-biology, the treatment and prevention of disease caused by bacteria, viruses, protozoa and fungi are made possible. Antibiotics were discovered through Microbiology, as were vaccines and other therapeutics. Hence the importance of the study of Micro-biology to the well being of Man can not be overemphasized.

Graduates of Micro-biology can work in diverse fields. As a Microbiologist, you can work in the food industry, you will work in the food manufacturing firms mainly doing quality control of manufactured food and beverages. You can also work in the agricultural and petroleum sector depending on your specialization.

O’LEVEL REQUIREMENTS TO STUDY MICROBIOLOGY

To study Microbiology, you must acquire at least Five (5) SSCE Credit Passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

There are however variation to these requirements in some Nigerian higher institutions. In the case of some Schools highlighted for you below:

  • UI requires Five (5) or Six (6) O’Level Credits Passes at one or two sittings to include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and any one or two of Physics, Geography and Agric Science
  • UNIUYO requires a Credit Passes in English Language.
  • IMSU,ANSU,UNIUYO and EBSU accept a Pass in English Language.
  • UNIJOS accepts Candidates with Pass at the Remedial Science Programme of the University of Jos.
  • FUTMINNA requires at least a Pass in Physics with Credit Pass in any other Science subject.
  • UNIOSUN accepts Geography or Economics in lieu of Biology
  • UNN requires O’ Level Credit Passes in English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
  • UNIBEN for Science Laboratory Technology requires Five  O’ level Credit Passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry and any two of Biology, Physics, Agricultural Science and Geography, depending on the option chosen by the candidate. Candidates opting for Physics/Electronics, Petrochemical Geology and Physiology/Pharmacology Techniques must have Credit in Physics.

JAMB Subject Combination For Microbiology

To apply for Microbiology in JAMB, you need the following subjects:-

  1. English Language (Compulsory For all courses)
  2. Biology,
  3. Physics
  4. And Chemistry.
