Many prospective NYSC corps member would be searching for the best northern states to serve as a youth corper. There are several reasons why these states are considered good places to live. They are known for having low crime rates, high quality of life, and affordable housing. The cost of living is also relatively lower compared to other parts of the country.

Below are some of the top reasons why you should serve as an NYSC Youth Corper in the north.

If you wish to select a northern state to do your NYSC, then you must to read through this article because we will be writing about those safe Northern states where you won’t experience Boko Haram or even Fulani herdsmen or any security threat.

Why Serve In North (Advantages)

While its known all over the Country, that the Northern part of Nigeria is a dangerous region to live and settle in, it is not all places that are insecure and unsafe to serve in.

Although, the practice of sharia law is very dominant in the north due to their Islamic background which is the most widespread religion in that part of the country. You can live in peace as a National Youth Service Corp member if you are not a law breaker and law abiding. All you need to do is to obey all rules and don’t go or enter a place you are not invited.

Cost of Living: Obviously, the North is far more cheaper to live or serve in than the southern part. There are many tales and accounts from people who served in the North. They all agree to the fact that you spend less and earn more as a NYSC corps member.

Business Opportunities: If you think Lagos is the only place where you can do business or make money as a youth corps member then you are wrong. On the contrary, there are businesses you can start as a youth corps member in the north and make good money that will not be possible in other regions in the country.

Before we list out those safe northern states to serve in Nigeria as a youth corps member, we would list the factors on how we arrived at these states.

  • Cheap cost of living
  • Business opportunities
  • Good security
  • Availability of jobs
  • Good basic amenities
  • Manageable state allowance (allowance)

Top 5 Best Northern States For NYSC

1. Niger State

Niger state is the best place to serve and do your NYSC in the north. The best place to serve in Niger state is in Kianji, Borgu Local Government. Apart from the fact that you won’t experience power outage in terms of NEPA, items are sold cheap at the market.

2. Abuja (FCT)

Abuja is another north central state that is generally safe for youth corps members to do their NYSC. There is more security in the FCT, because it’s the seat of the president, hence the security in FCT would make it difficult for the threat of Herdsmen or Boko Haram to thrive.

But, the only demerit of serving in the FCT is the high cost of living. To acquire an apartment or even a self-contain flat is very costly unless your place of primary assignment (PPA) offer you one.

In Abuja, you get more exposure, basic amenities, security. Abuja pay corps members N10,000 as monthly allowance and if you serve under private body you get to earn more.

3. Kano State

Kano is situated in the North west geo-political zone and it is the most economically developed state in that region. While we added Kano on this list is because it is one of the easiest state to start your business or make money as a corps member. Those who lived and served there agree to that.

From the report we gathered, from ex corps members who took up residence in the state after their NYSC, is due to the fact that they like the conditions of Kano or got employment there.

The only demerit of serving in Kano is that they don’t pay allowance to corps members. Aside from this, Kano state still remains one of the most safest states in the north that corps members should aspire to service in.
