What is Academic Writing: Definition with Examples

Academic Writing

As a student, you must have written quite a lot of assignments, essays, and whatnot. You might not have known this, but the way of writing such content is a bit different than other writings.

What makes academic writing so different from others? This, among several other questions, will be answered in this post as we uncover all the details about academic writing. Everything from its definition to the types and writing styles is included in this article.

What is Academic Writing

Academic writing is used to craft content that is used to convey educational information. It uses specific formal tones to convey messages, describe things, and even tell stories.

Academic writing usually involves conveying ideas and information in a clear, structured, and scholarly manner. These ideas and information can be taken from various sources and conveying them in a unique way involves paraphrasing and rewording techniques. You can manually restate ideas and information in your words, or you can use online tools.

Sometimes rather than employing online paraphrasers, you can take help of an article spinner to reword the ideas to make them unique. It can save time because paraphrasing can sometimes be a time taking and tiring activity while rewording with the help of an article spinner can take only a few seconds.

Usually, the need for academic writing comes in the form of assignments. Students are often assigned written tasks about topics from their curriculum. However, not all academic writing is of the same type.

Academic writing can be categorized in various ways. Some of these divisions are explained below.

Examples of Academic Writing

Academic writing has almost an innumerable number of types. Still, some of the common ones are as follows:

  • Essays
  • Research Papers
  • Reports
  • Reviews
  • Case Studies
  • Academic Articles

This is a generalized list. In reality, even these types are divided into subcategories. For example, reviews can be further divided into book reviews, literature reviews, article reviews, etc.

Academic Writing

Because of such a wide range of academic writing types, it is more commonly categorized based on writing styles. These are given in the next section.

Academic Writing Styles with Examples

A writing style is a form in which an author expresses something in the form of words. It constitutes the tone, word choice, sentence structure, and more. Here are 5 types of styles that are usually used for academic writing.

  1. Descriptive

To explain all types of details about a person, place, object, or happening, a descriptive writing style is normally used.  In this type of writing, the author is required to help the reader understand all about the topic and discuss all the intricate details.

Academic Writing

Example

Descriptive writing is commonly used to write essays and articles. This type of writing has quite a bunch of technical factors attached to it (grammar, readability, etc.).

  1. Analytical

Analytical writing is the type of writing in which a topic is explained by breaking it down into various sections. All these sections discuss various aspects related to that topic. This type of writing usually uses facts and figures to support the author’s arguments and claims.

Academic Writing

Example

This type of writing is commonly used to write scientific papers. Analytical writing often describes topics that are based on data. Informative topics are usually analyzed and then written about based on the results of that analysis.

  1. Critical

Critical writing is similar to analytical writing, but there are some clear distinctions. The goal of critical writing is to discuss all the aspects or answer all the questions about a certain topic.

Academic Writing

This can be done by looking at a topic from different points of view and assessing all possible outcomes. Critical writing usually gives birth to comprehensive write-ups.

Example

Creating thesis documents or research papers is a common use of this type of writing. Similarly, the best approach to writing a paper about a controversial topic would be a critical writing style.

  1. Persuasive

Persuasive writing is the type of writing in which the author compels the reader to agree with something. This could include personal views or just a given topic. This can be done with the help of arguments that use logic, facts, and even emotions.

Academic Writing

Example

This type of writing can often be used to write speeches or argumentative debates. Similarly, reviews can use this type of writing to make the reader agree with your opinion.

  1. Narrative

Narrative writing is basically storytelling in which a series of events is discussed. These events are given a proper order, and the writing has a timeline. Commonly, such writings have a plot, scenery, and even characters.

Academic Writing

Example

Yes, you guessed it, narrative writing style is usually used to describe fictional stories. However, that is not all. Even real-life events can be explained with a narrative writing style. For example, historical events or an autobiography is written in a narrative style.

Final Thoughts

Academic writing is a vast topic, and we have tried to cover everything about it. After reading the details about academic writing, you will be able to complete your written tasks with efficiency.

You will be able to identify the type of topic and write in an appropriate manner. So, without further delay, you should start working on your academic writing skills and improve your performance.
