What To Avoid When Writing A Good Resume

Posted on August 13, 2025 By CampusTimesNG 20 Comments on What To Avoid When Writing A Good Resume

The best thing you must do when writing a good resume is to write one that will stand out and make an impression.

Employers don’t have the time to spend reading through every page of a resume, so you must be the smart guy! Here are the most important things you must avoid when you are writing a good resume.

writing a good resume

1. Avoid Using An Inappropriate E-mail Address

When you are writing a good resume you must be sure your email readability is a good one. It must be professional, easy to type and you must not use vulgar words. Basically, your email address should be one that is best related to your name. Avoid using nicknames, numbers, or abstract characters.

2. Avoid Adding Irrelevant Personal Information

It is at the best of your advantage to avoid including any personal details which many job seekers often use. They include age, marital status, nativity, religious preference, weight, height, political views, or any other private information that could draw questioning.

This will prevent any bias and you would enjoy the benefits of employment equity. It is very important that you don’t need to indicate your Social Insurance Number in your resume.

3. Avoid Attaching Your Picture

Attaching your picture to your resume is not encouraged in some countries like Canada where migrant job rate is currently on the rise, though it is acceptable in some other countries.

Attaching your picture has a way of emotionally reducing your chances of how to get a job and cause a bias or diverted attention about your resume. Your target should be how to get the employer to be glued to your skills and experience, and not what you look like.

4. Don’t Over-emphasize With Bulleting

Please note that when writing a good resume, you must ensure that your resume is easy to read without using too many sections and subsections. Up to 5-7 bullet points will be okay.

This will help the employer to easily scan through your resume and recognize your potential. Your bullets should be smartly used so as to keep the information concise and easy to comprehend.

5. Do Not Use Personal Pronouns

Write your resume in the third person narrative, as though your resume is written by someone else. Avoid using “I,” “my,” or “me”.

6. Don’t Just List Job Duties

Your job title can technically reflect your job duties. So instead of simply listing your job duties, you should highlight your achievements as a way of persuading the employer to comprehend your job duties along with summarised specific examples.

7. You Don’t Have To Make General Statements

You don’t have to make general statements that have nothing to do with your actual contribution. What you should do is to personalize your experience. Vague statements like, “In charge for improving efficiencies and making cost savings”, doesn’t provide any clear information to a potential employer.

8. Don’t Mention Why You Left Your Previous Jobs

The main goal of writing a good resume is to advertise yourself, skills, experience, and achievements. So ensure to maintain the use of positive information because stating why you left your previous jobs can reduce your employable value before your potential employer.

9. Separate References

A potential employer will only request your references if they actually want to employ you. What you should do is to reserve your references on a separate sheet and present it is requested.

10. Carefully Use Hobbies or Interests

Ensure that you are careful about how you state your hobbies or interest because it can affect how your potential employer will rate you. But, if your hobbies are relevant to the position you apply for, you may include them so as to show the employer why you are the best fit for the job.

Now That You Know What To Avoid When Writing A Good Resume

Don’t forget that the best thing you must do when writing a good resume is to write one that will stand out and make a good impression of yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CV vs a resume?
The CV presents a full history of your academic credentials, so the length of the document is variable. In contrast, a resume presents a concise picture of your skills and qualifications for a specific position, so length tends to be shorter and dictated by years of experience (generally 1-2 pages).

Do employers prefer CV or resume?
When applying for most jobs in the U.S., a resume works best. You simply want to give the potential employer a reason to interview you. Applying for positions in the academic, research, scientific, and medical fields may require a CV rather than a resume.
