How to apply for masters with HND to study abroad? I am currently studying at University of South Africa (UNISA) and my final year project is on the topic of ‘how to apply for masters with HND to study abroad’. This is my last year project and I want to complete it before I graduate.

The research question that I am going to answer is ‘how to apply for master’s degree with HND to study overseas’

People are saying that HND holders cannot enroll for masters without having a B.sc or PGD (Postgraduate Diploma).I want to tell you that you can Enroll for your masters abroad with your HND certificate in universities overseas. I bet you. This is one of the advantages HND holders have over BSc. holders.

What You Need To Know and Do:

  1. If you have upper credit or distinction you have the chances of getting admission for master in the USA, this does not guarantee the admission until u meet up with all other requirements specified on the school website.
  2. Evaluating your HND and ND Transcripts, and certificate either with WES or other evaluating bodies. You need to send your Transcripts to WES through your school. There are generally 3 types of evaluations:
  • Course by Course

Each diploma/certificate is identified and described in the course by course credential evaluation report, and an equivalency for each document is provided. It denotes a description of educational periods, courses, credit hours, grades, and degrees, as well as overall academic performance in the United States educational system (or your host country).

In the United States, semester credits and a grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale are commonly used. The cost of evaluating is approximately $205, excluding the cost of sending the evaluation report to your desired schools.

  •  Document by Document

The document-by-document credential evaluation report describes and lists the educational institution(s) attended as well as the education credential(s) earned in a foreign country, as well as their US equivalence (e.g. Bachelor, Master, Doctorate, etc.).

When transfer credit is not expected, this type of credential evaluation is most commonly used in employment, immigration matters, and university admission. This type of assessment is not recommended for master’s students. Although some schools do accept it. Register for GRE or TOEFL, This is part of some schools’ requirements in most cases you can get Scholarships from the school If you score high. to prepare for GRE and TOEFL it takes like 3 months to get a high score, but if you are very good you can use less than that. You need to score high in order to be considered for admission and scholarship.

Answer: I receive this question, or something related all the time, so come closer, let’s answer it once and for all.

Admission into Graduate programs (Masters/PhDs) in Canada is very very competitive

A 70-75% CGPA is the common minimum CGPA required. This is about 3.5/5.0 CGPA scale

Also, successful applicants and those offered entrance funding are mostly those with grades higher than this.

Some reasons for these:

  • There are just about 100 Universities in Canada
  • Not all offer Masters/PhDs
  • Not all the ones with Masters/PhDs have your own program
  • Those offering your program will have a quota of students to admit
  • And more students apply than the quota available

Canadian schools also typically do not accept HNDs for a Masters/PhD. You will find that the Degree requirement is a 4-year BSc Degree

Some also focus on grades in the last 2 years of your BSc Degree, in addition to your overall BSc grade

So, let me tell you some things to do.

If you are looking for an “easy” route to come to Canada to study with your OND/HND, or a 2:2 CGPA/lower BSc Grade, your best bet is to look for a Graduate Certificate (GC) or equivalent

In some schools, this may also be called Postgraduate Diploma or Post Baccalaureate Diploma.

Graduate Certificate programs are great options for those with low undergrad grades, or those who have ND/HND

They are:

  • eligible for postgrad work permits
  • can still allow you to come with family
  • allow you to also school and work
  • have every international student benefit.

They can also be one year or two years depending on the school or program (just like Masters Degrees too), and the costs are similar to course-based Masters program.

The only downside is that they do not have scholarships, so prepare to fund yourself for the programs.

If you want to still try your best for a Masters/PhD too, you can, it is not totally impossible. Some people have done this in the past, but they often have more than just grades.

I will give you a summary of some things they did to complement the low grade & position themselves

Some things to do:

  • Build a research & publications portfolio (and get a Supervisor)
  • Get related work experience
  • Apply to lower-ranked schools
  • Write standardized tests & pass (i.e. GMAT/GRE…if required for your program)
    Prepare other Docs strongly (CV, SOP, Ref letters)

So even students with 2:1 & first class CGPA usually go for them if they don’t want Masters

    I sent an email to Plymouth university regarding using HND for masters they said they don’t accept it. most of all these schools do not accept HND, I wonder where you get the information from. Plymouth suggested that i should start from their undergraduate.
