Early Life and Politics

Osinbajo was born in Lagos in 1957 and attended the University of Lagos and the London School of Economics. He began lecturing at the University of Lagos shortly after, while continuing to practice law until 1999. In the same year, Osinbajo was named Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.

He left government in 2007 after serving for both of Tinubu’s four-year administrations and returned to law and lecturing, as well as preaching in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

Before the 2015 presidential election, Osinbajo was chosen as APC nominee Muhammadu Buhari’s running partner. President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo, the leaders at the time, were defeated by their ticket. Four years later, the ticket was re-elected over Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Osinbajo’s term has been defined by his rising profile, particularly when he assumed authority as Acting President while Buhari was away on business. Actions done during his brief tenure as Nigeria’s leader were decisive, but they were at odds with Buhari’s manner and sparked debate among Buhari’s inner circle.

Education

Corona Primary School in Lagos was where Osinbajo received his education. He earned a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degree in law between 1975 and 1978 at the University of Lagos.. At this event, he was also given the Graham-Douglas Prize for Commercial Law.

He was admitted to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1979 after completing the requisite one-year professional training at the Nigerian Law School. He graduated from the London School of Economics with a Master of Laws degree in 1980.

Following the founding of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013, Yemi was charged with designing and producing a manifesto for the new political party among other renowned Nigerians. The “Roadmap to a New Nigeria,” a paper produced by the APC as its manifesto if elected to power, was presented as a result of this. The Roadmap’s features included a free school lunch plan and a conditional cash transfer to the poorest 25 million Nigerians who enroll their children in school and immunize them. A number of projects aimed at providing economic opportunities for Nigeria’s enormous youth population were also implemented.

On December 17, 2014, retired General Muhammadu Buhari, the APC presidential candidate, announced Osinbajo as his running

mate and vice-presidential candidate for the 2015 general elections. During the All Progressives Congress’s 2014/2015 campaign, Yemi Osinbajo held multiple town hall meetings across the country, in contrast to the popular rallies that many Nigerians and politicians were accustomed to.

As Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he is responsible for supervising the economic planning team and reporting to the president, who makes the final decision. Many expect him to make a significant contribution to the much-needed judicial reform at the national level, given his legal experience and antecedents as a commissioner for justice in Lagos state for eight years.

Acting President

Muhammadu Buhari issued a letter to the presidents of the senate and house of representatives on May 9, 2017 informing them of his decision to go on a medical trip; the letter was read that day at a plenary assembly of both the senate and the house of representatives. During President Buhari’s medical leave, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was named acting president.

On August 7, 2018, Osinbajo removed Lawal Daura, the head of the State Security Service, following an illegal invasion of the National Assembly by armed and masked agents of the department. Matthew Seiyefa has taken Daura’s place.

Second Term

Osinbajo chastised the fact that social media is currently “under multi-jurisdictional regulation” in January 2019. He urged for greater international cooperation to find an agreement on how to control social media and combat hate speech.

Osinbajo’s helicopter crashed in Kabba, Kogi State, on February 2, 2019. After the crash, he survived and gave a previously scheduled campaign speech. In his remarks, he expressed his gratitude to God for “saving our lives from the event that had occurred.” We are all safe, and no one has been injured.

Tenure

Professor Yemi Osinbajo took his oath of office at Eagle Square in Abuja on May 29, 2019, to begin his second term.

Following the federal government’s decision to close the country’s land borders in October 2019, Osinbajo indicated that the move was made to draw other countries’ attention to the issue of border security. He stated that China and other countries were smuggling agricultural items into Nigeria, hurting the Nigerian economy and endangering the country’s agriculture. Osinbajo stated that by closing the borders, the government was helping to protect the economy and Nigeria’s producers and farmers.

Osinbajo questioned the government’s proposed social media laws in October 2019, saying that “government control is not necessarily the way to go.” Instead, he urged citizens to become more involved in social media monitoring. Citizens and leaders, both political and religious, he said, “bear a responsibility to our society and everyone else” to “guarantee that it does not become an instrument” of war. He also warned against spreading “religious deception” on social media, which could lead to violence and bloodshed.

The Emir of Daura, Faruk Umar, dubbed Osinbajo “the most trustworthy Vice President of Nigeria” and commended him for his dedication to President Buhari’s administration during a visit to Daura on November 3, 2019. The Emir bestowed upon him the title of Danmadamin Daura, the emirate’s highest traditional title.

President Muhammadu Buhari selected Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to chair an economic sustainability group on March 31, 2020. The committee’s goal is to devise methods to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus and, in the long run, reorient the Nigerian economy.
