Interview Attire Dos and Don'ts

Top Interview Attire Dos and Don’ts For Your Next Interview

Posted on June 4, 2025 By CampusTimesNG No Comments on Top Interview Attire Dos and Don’ts For Your Next Interview

Don’t mess up your big day! Knowing your interview attire dos and don’ts will give you an edge. Knowing which clothes to wear to an interview has become a little tricky; the classic suit is not always the right choice. Everyone knows you have to walk the walk and talk the talk but you can’t do it naked.

An obvious part of getting a job offer is making a good first impression, and a big part of making a good impression depends on the looks of your interview attire. While you may not have to spend lots of money on your wardrobe, in the long run, putting in a bit of extra effort does pay off.

It is a good idea to find out the company’s dress code before the interview. If not sure, check the social media platform of the company to find out their dress style. Politicians spend good money on advice on what to wear to win over the voters, there is no doubt what we wear has persuasive power.

Before your next interview, make sure you do not make any interview attire mistakes by avoiding these fashion dos and don’ts.

Interview Attire Dos and Don'ts

Here are the Top Interview Attire Dos and Don’ts:

1. Update Your Wardrobe

Is your wardrobe outdated? Is that the first interview in some years? Do yourself a favor by investing in some fashion-forward business attire. For example, you can wear a bright red shirt, but pair it with a black suit. There are less-dramatic colors that do work well for business interviews. For the ladies, it’s a better idea to avoid short hemlines together with skin-tight fits.

Do polish your shoes. Learn something from British royals on this one, don’t show off your toes.

2. Do Have a Dress Rehearsal.

What is your interview attire saying about you? You begin to make a first impression before you even speak.Interview Attire Dos and Don'ts

Do show off on a power suit. It will eventually pay for itself. Do test wear your outfit and be sure you are comfortable sitting, walking, and standing in it.

While a blazer is a good-to-go choice for almost any interview, be conscious of what you wear underneath. A blazer doesn’t upgrade the rest of your outfit.

If you’re going to wear a camisole or a shell underneath a deep-V formed by the blazer, make sure it decently covers you. Of course, layering with a button-down is a good option, too.

3. Get The Right Clothes Ready

Do get your outfit ironed and dry cleaned so as to have your dress look as polished and professional as you can be. Be careful about casual. Wearing the right clothes for a job interview is as important as what not to wear. Choosing appropriate interview attire will help you make the best impression.

4. Don’t Do Too Much With the Cologne and Perfume

Most recruiters and employers are very sensitive or even allergic to strong scents, so this will be the first thing that greets the recruiter when it should rather be a good handshake and eye contact. Sure you don’t want your obvious spray of perfume or dab of cologne to be the first or last thing your recruiters notice about you. See 6 things recruiters target at first glance.

5. Do Simple Jewelry and Accessories

Interview Attire Dos and Don'tsJewelry and accessories offer a way to express your self but keep the bling simple. Both women and men should wear accessories with simplicity.

It is important for ladies to avoid excess jewelry; instead of big hoops or chandelier earrings, choose classic studs so you won’t appear like a party frick. It’s also important to avoid wearing flashy necklaces, large sunglasses, or anything dazzling or conspicuous.

While accessories aren’t so much of an issue for men, it’s important for men to be conscious of their cufflinks, the tie clip, and the belt; don’t wear anything like a club attire.

6 Don’t Overdo Your Make-up

You just have to look tidy and refreshed. Do wear make-up that puts you at your best, but not extravagant. While it’s important to appear in your best, overdoing your makeup is not the ideal way to go about interview attire. There are Dos and Don’t. Keep a natural look by avoiding dark eyeshadow, bright lipstick, or heavy foundation.

Your best bet should be to stick with a light coat of mascara, a soft touch of powder, and some tinted lip balm. Just look refreshed and awake, without looking too flashy.

7. Do Traditional Ties to Make Best Impression

Interview Attire Dos and Don'tsIn fact, our data suggest that most individuals stick to either a tie that is red or a tie that is blue. It is worth your time doing a little research on what to wear for your next interview. Even if you think your tie will make a statement, err on the side of caution and stick with something that’s more traditional. A pattern with conservative colors will be perfectly fine, like faint stripes or tasteful paisley.

In Conclusion

Talking about Interview attire dos and don’ts, basically, your interview attire should be tailored to the type of job you are applying for to impress relevance. Carefully plan your outfit to fit your prospective company’s dress code. A poor choice of a suit would indicate you don’t fit in or you don’t understand the company culture. No matter the organization you should look neat, tidy, and well-dressed.
