Top 5 Countries Nigerian Students Can Work While Studying
Practical experiences have recently shown that there are countries that are willing to give work permits to foreign students who want to work while studying. The countries include, USA, Australia, Canada etc.
If you are having the ambition of studying abroad in any of these countries mentioned above, you may not really have to worry much about money for your living expenses as you will be able to get part-time jobs there.
Below are Five (5) countries Nigerian students can work while studying.
CANADA
Obtaining a Canadian visa can be quite easy for Nigerian students intending to study in Canada. But, students will be asked to supply sufficient evidence that tuition and living expenses are adequately taken care of.
However, if you plan to take up a part time job, the country has a work permit programmes that allow students to work part time, especially during regular academic sessions for 20 hours a week and full time during scheduled breaks, such as winter and summer holidays, and spring break. The average hourly wage for jobs in Canada range from $15 to $25.
UNITED STATES
The United States is among countries that also give opportunities to Nigerian students who are willing to work part time along side their studies.
But, you will require a student visa like the F-1 visa, which is the one given to international students that will study a full time program in high schools, universities, and other higher institutions in the country.
You will have the right to work only On-campus for a maximum of 20 hours per week during the study period and up to 40 hours per week during the break period.
However, you will not be able to work Off-campus until you ask for a work permit from the immigration services of the United States. You can only demand for this Off-campus work permit a year after the beginning of your study.
UNITED KINGDOM
There are many Nigerian students spread across UK varsities. And some of them are allowed to take up part-time jobs to augment for their tuition fees and living expenses.
If you plan to work part time along side your studies in the UK, you will need to apply for a Tier 4 visa. A tier-4 visa usually permits international students to work on an average of 20 hours per week during school sessions and full-time during the holidays. The maximum hours an international student might work during a semester will be printed on the visa sticker.
However, you should have it in mind that the work permit in the UK will depend on the type of course and institution where you will study. You will only be given a work permit if the program of your interest is taught by an institution funded with governmental funds or an institution allowed to give higher education degree.
AUSTRALIA
Nigerian students intending to study in Australia will have to acquire a student visa. The visa allow students to work for specific number of hours, usually 40 hours of work per fortnight when the college is in session and full time during vacation.
It is important to know that your employer must give you a formal agreement which should establish the minimum wage you will recieve per hour, as well as your working conditions.
FRANCE
As a student in France, you will be able to work both On-campus and Off-campus. However, in order for this to happen, you will need acquire a residency card and be studying in an institution that give access to social security system.
You will have the right to work up to 964 hours during the year, which is equivalent to 60% of the 35 hours per week that are usually worked in the country. Also, you will have the possibility to earn a minimum wage of 9.40 euros per hour with approximately 20% going to taxes.
