If you are a foreign national or citizen of another country and wish to apply for a student visa in Canada, you will be required to get a study permit before you can formally enter the country to study. Study permits allow international students to study at Canada’s Designated Learning Institutions (DLI).
Before you apply, ensure you have all the necessary documents. The Canadian consulate or embassy in your country should have the latest information regarding what is required. The university at which you plan to study should also be able to provide guidance for international students trying to acquire a study permit.

So, what is expected of you to obtain your student visa for Canada? Let’s look at the main steps for applying and getting a student visa in Canada.
1. Make your choice of a university to apply to and get your acceptance letter
The first thing you need to do is getting a university or college, where you want to study in Canada. You will have to decide on a fully accredited Canadian tertiary institution before you can start your student visa application process.

2. Begin your application for the Canadian student visa
As soon as you receive an acceptance letter from the school, it is time to apply for a student visa, which is known as a study permit.
The first steps to getting your student visa:
- Apply online for your Canada student visa or study permit, on the CIC website before you land in Canada.
- for countries with limited or lack of internet access, it’s also possible to file for visa on paper.
- Present your acceptance letter from a DLI (a university or college recognized by the Canadian authority).
- Present proof of sufficient funds to support your studies in Canada.
- Present police; and medical reports that state you are in good health.
According to recent immigration regulations, you may renew or extend your student visa or study permit, if you want to continue your studies, if your programme has an extension or if you change your higher institution.
The study permit expires three (3) months after your studies are completed when you receive a notification of the program completion. You can still remain in Canada to travel or apply for a work permit, which enables you to take a part-time or full-time job.

- A letter of explanation
- Also, a proof that you have paid the study permit fee (150 CAD)
4. Language requirements for the Canada student visa

- IELTS
- TOEFL
- Cambridge English: Advanced
Even if proof of language skills is not included in the list of important documents for a Canadian study permit. It is wise to have some proof of English ability, just in case. See the Full list of IELTS Training Centres In Nigeria.
5. Biometrics Appointment and Interview
You may also be required to be present at a Visa Application Centre in your home country to have your biometrics taken. Check out for Common Travel Visa Interview Questions and Sample Answers.
The biometric fee charge is eight-five (85) CAD. This fee is in addition to the normal visa fee. Some countries are however exempted from the biometrics visit, so it’s likely they won’t need to appear for biometrics application at all.
After applying for your Canadian student visa in Canada, the processing time for your visa may take up to Ninety (90) days but sometimes takes less.
