7 Scholarship Application Mistakes You Can Avoid This Year

Posted on July 10, 2025 By CampusTimesNG 2 Comments on 7 Scholarship Application Mistakes You Can Avoid This Year

There are a lot of scholarship application mistakes we often make as students whenever we apply for one. Be it local or international scholarship, we need to realize that there are simple things we ought to always get right.

So, to help avoid the same error this year, our team at CAMPUS TIMES NIGERIA have identify seven (7) common scholarship application mistakes they have noticed.

Seven (7) Scholarship Application Mistakes You Can Avoid This Year

1. Failing to read through scholarship requirements and criteria

One of the common application mistakes we often make is neglecting to understand the criteria and requirements of a scholarship before applying for it. If you want to successfully apply for a scholarship, you need to thoroughly read and understand the requirements and criteria highlighted by the scholarship provider.

2. Applying for scholarships you are not eligible for

There are many scholarship programmes and opportunities coming out on a daily basis. However, these scholarships are often targeted to a specific group of people. It could be on the basis of age, sex, nationality, level (undergraduate/postgraduate) etc.

If you are applying for a scholarship you are not eligible for, you will not be successful. Instead, try to identify a scholarship that closely match with your profile before applying.

3. Failing to answer the scholarship essay question

Many scholarship providers often expect you to answer an essay question. failing to address these essays will really limit your chances of success.

Futhermore, when you are writting a scholarship essay, try to create a nice piece, one that will grab the reader’s attention, as this will increase your chances of winning the scholarship.

4. Leaving mistakes in your scholarship application?

Avoid mistakes such as spellings or grammatical errors, missing punctuation or words. we advice that you proofread your scholarship application or you get someone to do that for you.

5. Not providing accurate information in the application form

On many occasion, students fail to get a scholarship because they presented wrong and inaccurate information for the scholarship they apply for.

Ensure you fill in your information accurately. And do not play smart, if you are caught you will be denied a scholarship.

6. Submitting multiple applications

Students often make the mistakes of creating multiple accounts when applying for a scholarship. These will surely be detected and deny you of any chances to winning a scholarship. Ensure you create one account and apply using that account only.

7. Missing scholarship application deadline

This mistake is very common among our students. We always think we have enough time to apply for a scholarship and that is not always the case. After putting so much effort and resources on a scholarship application, we end up only to realize that we missed the application deadline day.

The best way to avoid this is to begin researching and applying for relevant scholarships well in advance of the application deadline date.

If you have any other scholarship application mistakes you think we can avoid, kindly indicate that through the comment section at the bottom of this page.?
