The University of Uyo is situated in Uyo, the Nigerian state capital of Akwa Ibom. The University of Cross River State, Uyo, was the previous name of the institution.

The University of Uyo was established on October 1st, 1991, by the Federal Government of Nigeria as a Federal University. The former University of Cross River State, founded by Cross River State in 1983, left all of its facilities, faculty, students, and academic programs to the university.

It must be noted that what is now the University of Uyo underwent a number of transformations. It evolved from a Teacher’s College (TC) to an Advanced Teacher’s College (ATC), and then to a College of Education (COE), which joined forces with the University of Port Harcourt to offer degree programs.

Although, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) had set the cut-off marks or benchmark of 120 for Universities, 100 for Polytechnics and Colleges of Education.

University of Uyo has however pegged their minimum cut-off marks to 180 above for it 2025/2026 admission exercise.
