How To Get Legal Permit To Work In The U.S.

Posted on June 23, 2026 By CampusTimesNG No Comments on How To Get Legal Permit To Work In The U.S.

All employers in the United States are expected to verify that employees have legal permit to work in the U.S.

If a person is not a citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States they will require a permit to work in the U.S, officially recognized as an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), to show eligibility to work in the U.S.

Both parties are required to show and require proof of legal employment status. Employees are demanded to prove that they can legally work in the US, and employers are expected to verify the identity and eligibility to work for each new employee.

Foreign Nationals Permitted to Work in the U.S.

There are several categories of foreign workers who are permitted to work in the United States which include temporary (non-immigrant) workers, permanent immigrant workers, and student and exchange workers. However, it is not far fetched to know why it is still valuable to go to college in the United States.

Categories of workers who are allowed to work in the U.S. include:

  1. Citizen of the United States
  2. Non-citizen nationals of the United States
  3. Lawful permanent resident
  4. An alien authorized to work

Foreign workers who can be permitted to work in the U.S. include:

Temporary (non-immigrant) Workers: A temporary worker is a person who wants to enter the United States temporarily for a particular purpose.

Non-immigrants can be in the United States for a temporary period, and once in the United States, they are restricted to the activity or purpose for which their nonimmigrant visa was offered.

Permanent (Immigrant) Workers: A permanent worker is a person who is authorized to live and work in the United States permanently.

Students and Exchange Visitors: Students may, under particular situations, be authorized to work in the United States, because there are choices for Student Visa work during and after school. Therefore, they must get permission from a designated official at their school.

The authorized official is recognized as a Designed School Official (DSO) for students, and the Responsible Officer (RO) for exchange visitors. Exchange visitors can be eligible for temporary work in the U.S. via the exchange visitor visa program.

How You Can Get Legal Permit To Work In The U.S.

An Employment Authorization Document (EAD), also called an EAD card, or working permit, or work permit is a document that is issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)

This document will guarantee that the holder has been authorized to work in the United States. An EAD is a plastic card usually valid for a year which is renewable and replaceable.

Applicants for an EAD can request:

  1. Permission to accept employment
  2. Replacement (of a lost EAD)
  3. Renewal of permission to accept employment
