The Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) is a federal government university located in Owerri, the capital of Imo State. FUTO is the Oldest University of Technology in Nigeria and was established in 1980 by the first Executive President, Shehu Shagari.
It became the first of three such Universities set up by the Federal Government of Nigeria who sought to establish a University of Technology in each geo-political region and particularly in a State which did not have a conventional University. The other Federal Technology universities are located at Minna and Akure respectively.

Federal University Of Technology Owerri Admission Requirements
To study at Federal University Of Technology Owerri, you must possess the following requirements:
- The candidate must be over 16 years of age in the year of admission (Some student swear an affidavit just to increase their ages)
- Candidates must possess a minimum of 5 credit passes in relevant subjects which must include English Language and mathematics at GCE O?Level, WASCE, SSCE, NECO or approved equivalents at not more than 2 sittings.
- Candidates with Teachers Grade II (TC II) with passes at credit or merit levels in conjunction with credit passes in relevant subjects at GCE, WASCE, SSCE, NECO or approved equivalents may be considered. No subject may be counted at both TC II and GCE O/Level, WASCE, SSCE, NECO or approved equivalents.
- The candidate must make at least 200 pass mark in JAMB to qualify for internal screening.
